Hi Everyone,

I will no longer be posting to this blog. It has become difficult to post items during my work day and my after work hours are devoted to my daughter.

But do not become discouraged I offer an alternative! I am now chatting. I will be on my Google Chat account, sumerian2@gmail.com during my normal work day (Mon-Fri 8:30a-4p). So please consider adding me to your buddy list and looking me up whenever you need research help. I've also posted my commitment calendar online at http://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=sumerian2%40gmail.com. This way you'll know when I'm teaching, doing reference, or going to be embedded in your department.

Archaeologists have discovered a large burial ground beneath the Vatican in Rome which is 3,000 years old. The necropolis is a major find and is being described as the next Pompeii.

Oriental Institute to go Open Access

According to a posting on Stoa

The Oriental Institute of The University of Chicago announced a new publication policy yesterday: “Starting in 2005, the Oriental Institute is committed to digitizing all of its publications and making them available online, without charge. The minimum for each volume, old and new, current and forthcoming, will be a Portable Document Format (PDF) version following current resolution standards. New publications will appear online at or near the same time they appear in print. Older publications will be processed as time and funding permits”.
A suite of a score of publications is initially available at their page of Electronic Publications On-Line.

Unfortunately OI's homepage and news page do not confirm this post.

Shrinking long URLs

I had a question about shrinking long URLs, like the ones you get from JSTOR. You can use an online tool called "TinyURL" at http://tinyurl.com. Simply paste in the long URL and TinyURL will generate a much smaller link. Now don't ask me how this works because I don't have a degree in computer programming but I think it is an incredible tool, give it a try.
